The use of UV LED curing in flexographic printing has significantly increased in recent years and the technology is now firmly established within the industry. Many believe its use will soon overtake that of conventional UV curing technology, to eventually become the default solution.

Global rises in energy costs, coupled with a laser focus from brands on sustainability issues, are driving a sharp rise in the adoption of energy-efficient UV LED systems. Despite this, some still doubt how useful it could be to their business. Charlie Kortens, editor of FlexoTech, and Jamie Neill, sales manager UK & Ireland at GEW (EC), will be joined in this open discussion by UV LED adopters Morag Ash of Bizerba Labels (UK) Ltd and Adrian Brown of Olympus Print Group.

Topics covered:
  • How does UV LED benefit flexo printers?
  • Which applications is UV LED most appropriate for?
  • What are the costs involved with UV LED and how does it impact energy consumption?
  • What is the installation experience like for printers?
  • How was production improved after installation?
  • What are the pros and cons of UV LED technology?

Adrian Brown

Adrian Brown

General manager

Olympus Print Group

View Bio

Adrian Brown has never had any doubts regarding the explosion of UV LED technology. With a 40-year background in print technology, an apprenticeship as a litho printer was followed into production planning, then sales and marketing, before taking the step to set up his own print company.

Adrian has a firm belief in the phrase ‘standing still is moving backwards’ and this led to him purchasing Olympus’ first UV LED lampheads from GEW back in 2019. The ArcLED enabled system on their Nilpeter FA4 allows Olympus to interchange E2C and LeoLED cassettes on a job-by-job basis to allow Olympus to meet their customers’ requirements.
